The World’s Most Extreme Photography Equipment
April 9, 2008
There are several categories of camera gear available: there’s the sensible, the desirable and then there’s the stuff that you’d never even imagined. Here’s a selection of equipment that most definitely belongs in the latter category.
This stuff is crazy! I love it, I might be tempted to pick up some of this stuff for my world tour next year.
Mountain Gorilla Crisis
April 7, 2008
This is a pretty important issue to me, political instability in the Congo is threatening an already threatened population of Mountain Gorillas.
Check out the CNN Video:

From the DFGFI Website and press release:
The situation for the mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Virunga National Park) remains critical, because political insecurity has not allowed Congo’s park rangers to resume their work patrolling and protecting the forest where the gorillas live. DFGFI’s Kabara Research Station, where we work in conjunction with the Congolese park authorities (ICCN), is unable to continue its operations at this time.
DFGFI is part of a crisis task force that includes the Congolese park authorities (ICCN) and other conservation groups, and stands ready to continue providing support for park rangers, special guards, a medical clinic, emergency supplies, health programs, and other needs in this region, as soon as the situation improves. We are maintaining close contact with ICCN regarding the situation in Congo’s Virunga Park.
Our facilities for “confiscated” gorillas, in conjunction with the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, continue to operate in both Congo and Rwanda. Here we provide round-the-clock daily care for young gorillas that have been confiscated from poachers or whose family groups have been killed.
In Rwanda, DFGFI’s regular patrols of the mountain gorillas continue uninterrupted from the Karisoke Research Center. All of our other programs continue as well, including our work in the interior area of Congo, where we partner with national parks and community-based reserves to help save the endangered Grauer’s (eastern lowland) gorilla populations. We also continue to conduct our education, health and economic programs in this interior region of Congo, which stretches from Maiko National Park to Kahuzi-Biega Park, and in Rwanda.
The DFGFI needs your support on an ongoing basis through support as a member, donation or sponsorship of a Gorilla family. The question is: Are you going to do anything about it or crack open another bag of Cheetos and catch up on the latest episode of “The Hills”??
Corbis suing Crestock Microstock Website out of Norway
April 3, 2008
Looks like Corbis Corporation and Bill Gates found very little humour in the april fool’s joke put on by Crestock Microstock out of Norway. Gates and Corbis are pursuing legal action…time to lighten up a bit?
This is funny on one hand since it was obviously a joke but now it looks like things are getting a little bit hot over there. At least the crestock guys are maintaining their cool in all of this. I wonder how far it’ll go?
Congress To Big Oil: “What with the Billion Dollar Profits?”
April 2, 2008
Congress, after finally getting enough heat from constituents, is calling on representatives from the five largest U.S. oil companies to Capitol Hill to answer a few questions.
It’s not like I was driving past a few gas stations in town today and saw gas prices at $1.10 per LITRE here in Ontario, even though I’m spending half my time in Vancouver and half in Ontario that’s a ridiculous amount to be paying.
I’m sure in Vancouver it’s much higher. Stop subsidizing big oil and screwing us over on gas prices. *sigh*
Crestock buys Corbis
April 2, 2008
Announced today on the Crestock website (a micropayment stock photo website) that Crestock has acquired Corbis for 625 million in cash and assets. The logos have already merged…

Even though this was a joke - and an awfully good one, it appears that Corbis is threatening Crestock. Looks like the big guy on the block isn’t very pleased with the upstart stock photo site!
