BC Place Roof : Collapse
Update 1/12/2007:
Looks like the Wikipedia has updated their BC Place with Dome Deflation news updates.
Also thought I'd add the CTV news story as well : BC Place Stadium's inflated roof rips, collapses.
The Globe and Mail is reporting that additional tears have happened since the original tear and subsequent deflation.
And finally from the horses mouth. The new roof panel has arrived!
MEDIA UPDATE
JANUARY 11, 2007
BC Place
BC Place will be holding a media briefing today at 1:30 pm. The roof panel, which was delayed in transit has arrived. Crews have prepared for the panel's arrival and there are also several inspection crews on site. It is expected that the panel will take 24 to 48 hours to install. Once the installation is complete, all tear repairs are finished and the safety inspection is finalized, preparations for the roof inflation will begin. A date for re-inflation has not yet been determined.

Update 1/10/2007:
Looks like Angus Reid is conducting a poll - Repair the Roof or Build a new Venue? Looks like 62% of people think the roof should be repaired. Apparently those people have never either tried to see a game there or listen to a concert (reverberating echoes and lousy acoustics seem to be in style!)
Found another video on YouTube for all your BC Place Deflated dome needs. It's a good little over view of the history behind that loveable little air aupported dome. The clip comes from the Vancouver 24 Hours podcast.
Update 1/10/2007: Looks like our friends over at BC Place have issued a press advisory located here: http://www.bcplacestadium.com/newsreleases/jan052007.html - in brief you can call Linda Bilben 604.505.3171 or 604.689.8801.
Here are a few excerpts from that press release:
«Vancouver, BC – A team of over 90 people are currently hard at work assessing and repairing the damage to BC Place following a tear in a roof panel on Friday afternoon and subsequent damage over the weekend.
A total of 90 staff – 45 stadium staff, 35 riggers, 10 restoration experts – and a safety consultant are working around the clock despite adverse weather conditions. A crane at the stadium was grounded at 9:30AM today due to strong wind gusts and was recommissioned at 1:30PM. Precautions are being taken for all assessment teams.»
If you live in BC and specifically Vancouver you'll know that with the current weather it is in fact the end of days.
Update 1/8/2007: I've added some information about the collapsed roof at BC Place. Including a very cool video from YouTube. I'll be updating the resources on this page so you can easily access all the up to date info in one place.
1/7/2007: From the CBC - Additional tears found in the Roof of BC Place
1/6/2007: From the CBC The new telfon section to arrive next week
«A replacement panel for the damaged roof of Vancouver's B.C. Place Stadium is expected to arrive early next week. A section of the Teflon-coated fabric roof tore loose during a sleet storm on Friday and began flapping in the wind.»
My little BC Place collapsing dome experience:
So I live about 1 block from the now collapsed BC Place dome. When this happened the buzz around here was flying fast and furious. A friend of a co-worker has an office overlooking the dome and took some great shots of the damaging and subsequent collapsed dome at BC Place.
Soon thereafter, the gossip started flying around about costs, evactuations, permenant collapse and long term issues. Anyhow, I quickly took the pictures of the collapsed BC Place dome which were emailed to me and posted them on my Flickr Account .
To be honest I didn't intentionally do anything except something which is very much second nature to myself. I share all my photos using Flickr, I don't do it for «Wed 2.0» reasons or anything of the sort. It's just easy, it's quick and I have a habit of posting like the nerd that I am.
I quickly noticed these pictures were getting alot of love from the Flickr community, which is neat because I like it when people come have a look at my pics (nothing to hide here). Anyhow one of the viewers posted the following comment:
Derek L says:
You know you had the first decent images of the collapsed BC dome that I could find in my search yesterday including news sites and getty images! Web 2.0! woohoo! haha.. anyways good job!
Now that is cool. Little old Dan and his little old flickr account had scooped both news sites and Getty images. As much as the phrase is overused the reality is that I was on the cutting edge of photojournalism, even if for a few minutes.
muhahaha.
